Join with BCSSL today because "Enthusiasm leads the way".
At BCSSL we always aim to do something to inspire our own members as well as the general public. We conduct two major events per year - most likely a race and a workshop. Lectures are conducted frequently on topics that interest not only butterflies, but many other aspects of wildlife and nature conservation. Every other month when our schedule is devoid of a lecture, we organize a field trip where everyone can have fun while boosting up their knowledge at the field itself.
Due to prevailing conditions, the BCSSL events are on hold. Keep in touch to get to know about our next event.
'Grow With Nature' Kids Programme - 2020
BCSSL conducted the “Grow with Nature” Kids Programme for the third time on 18th January 2020, at Diyasaru Park, Thalawathugoda. The event is organized annually in the aim of building up enthusiasm and creating awareness among younger generation on nature.
Nearly 60 kids took part in the event, and they were involved in fun and interactive nature based activities, allowing them to learn about insects while exploring the wetland ecosystem.
Dragonfly Workshop - 2020
The Field workshop on Dragonflies of Sri Lanka, organised by the Butterfly Conservation Society of Sri Lanka took place from 29th August to 1st September 2020. Fully funded by the Rufford Foundation, this workshop was organized by BCSSL in hand with Dragonfly South Asia Community.
The main objectives were to promote research on Sri Lankan dragonflies and to improve the capacity of amateur biologists and naturalists to study and conserve them. 25 participants shortlisted from around 150 applicants took part in the event. The participants consisted mostly of university students, amateur naturalists, researchers and a few local guides from the Forest Department as well.
Butterfly Dragonfly Race - 2019
The Butterfly and Dragonfly Race 2019 was concluded successfully with the participation of around 80 nature enthusiasts on 6th April 2019. This consisted of university students, school children and other youngsters. The event was held this time for the fourth consecutive year, and was shifted to a new and more exciting venue this time - Seethawaka Wet Zone Botanic Gardens.
Team YBA from Young Biologists' Association grabbed the winning place while team Odonoptera was the runners-up. All the winners were awarded valuable prices.
In addition to the competition, field sessions were conducted by renowned entomologist Dr. George van der Poorten and our own specialists Mr. Himesh Dilruwan Jayasinghe and Mr. Amila Prasanna Sumanapala.
Congratulations to all the winners, and a big thanks to all the participants and everyone that helped make this event a success!
General field visits are organized by BCSSL for its members to further study about nature; not only about butterflies but about other flora and fauna as well. These trips focus on specific areas of the country where interesting observations, taking field records and photographing butterflies and other species are possible. Field work usually ends with a meaningful discussion of the day's work.
A lecture on a subject pertaining to the study of Lepidoptera and other invertebrates will be conducted by a suitable BCSSL member or an invited guest on the last Saturday of every month at Department of Zoology, University of Colombo. Lectures are aimed at sharing knowledge on the subject as well as promoting conservation of the relevant flora and fauna. We welcome everybody to join hands with us for these lectures and share knowledge. Details are available through the website and the official Facebook page.
